Choosing a Doctor
Although any eye doctor is capable of prescribing and fitting the Peli Lens™, few know about it. Eye doctors rarely deal with your hemianopic condition, but you live with it. You need to become the expert when presenting what you want and to be in a position to educate your doctor. This web site is a good educational tool for both you and your eye doctor. See our Learning Center.
Step 1 Go to the “Find a Doctor” section of this web site and see if there is an eye doctor near you who fits the Peli Lens™. Choosing from this list will save you much aggravation long term even if there is more travel involved. These doctors have fit the Peli Lens™ and are convinced that it works. The more experienced the doctor is in fitting these prisms, the more successful the patient will be in adapting to them.
If you have found a doctor, skip to Helpful Hints
Step 2 Your family optometrist, may be a good alternate choice to fit the Peli Lens™ locally. Chances are that he/she is not aware of the Peli Lens™ and does not know how to fit it. Before spending money for a doctor’s appointment based on a misunderstanding of your visual needs, ask that the doctor, not the receptionist, to contact you for a telephone consult so you can clarify your needs and have him/her make preparations to see you. The doctor should:
1. Review this web site at www.hemianopia.org 2. Read the research in Archives of Ophthalmology 3. Contact you to discuss a strategy 4. Order the Peli lens™ Fitting Kit from Chadwick Optical
If your family optometrist is willing to fit the Peli Lens™ skip to Helpful Hints
Step 3 Your ophthalmologist, may be a good alternate choice to write a prescription for the Peli Lens™ but may send you to an optician to fit the prisms. Chances are your ophthalmologist is not aware of the Peli Lens™ and the optician does not know how to fit it. You should become knowledgeable enough to co-ordinate these two professionals (Maybe it would be a good idea to look at Step 1 and Step 2 again).

Decide whether the Ophthalmologist or the Optician should order the Peli Lens™ Fitting Kit from Chadwick Optical. Both professionals will need to read it, but the optician or the professional that will fit them to your glasses will need the prisms that come with the Fitting Kit.
If you feel comfortable that the Ophthalmologist and Optician can satisfy your needs skip to Helpful Hints.
Step 4 If you are having difficulty finding a doctor nearby who is willing to work with you, we can try to locate one for you. Please e-mail your physical address to us at help@hemianopia.org. and we will get back to you shortly.

Do nothing for 3 months post stroke
Spontaneous recovery of the Visual Field Loss is possible within the first 3 months after the stroke that caused the visual field loss, so no action should be taken until this time passes and the possibility of spontaneous recovery is ruled out. Use this time to visit the our Learning Center and look around for a doctor. |
